As I wrote in the introduction to my book, L'Amour Déraisonné: Reclaiming Self, we're all on a "Path of Love". No matter what form or appearance our life may take, we're all looking for love in some form or another. It's all about love; life is about love! For some people this takes the path of an intimate relationship with spouse or significant other, for others this is enlarged to family, perhaps community...for others it's the path of service, love of all life (the planet and all forms of life including animals). Whatever your path, without love you wither and die, symbolically and physically.
John O'Donohue, an amazing 20th C Irish poet and mystic (who left us only a few years ago in his early 50's) says in his book of Celtic wisdom, Anam Cara: "Love is our deepest nature, and consciously or unconsciously, each of us searches for love." Another inimitable mystic from 6 centuries before--Meister Eckhart--explained, we all suffer from a cosmic loneliness he called the "umbra nihili". We appear to live in "a vast universe often sinister and unaware of us" and we all need love to soothe our loneliness; O'Donohue says, " love is the sister of the soul. In and through the warmth and creativity of love, the soul shelters us from the bleakness of that nothingness."
In my recent years of changed perception and discovered freedom, I have come to find this true. Love is what feeds us, gives us life and makes it all worth living. Without love the "bleakness of nothingness" is deathly heavy, oppressive, frightening and painful. But notice the paradox, ..we all want love, need love, yet seem to find it ever elusive. We look in the wrong places or find a love that turns on us, abandoning us to the pain and terror of that "umbra nihili" when we least expect it.
How do we find love? How do we maintain it, and how do we continue to feed and be nourished at its table, protected by its loving embrace? These are the eternal, all-important questions...questions that require us to explore and examine the nature of love, so we may learn the necessary steps to dance with it.
That is my invitation to you this summer and early Fall. Learn to dance with Love in your life...every day! Discover love, choose to have more love in your life, share love, be love, love...! Walk consciously on your path of love and become intimate with love's ways. In what way would your life change should you accept this challenge? Only you can tell us after you accept the invitation, so jump in, explore and experience.
And for those of you wishing to dive in deeper, I invite you to join us for our upcoming Project on Love: "All About Love ", a three month individual on-line exploration starting in September. This past Spring a number of French participants explored the transformative, healing effects of beauty in the "Beauty Project". I invite all of you to participate in transformative experiences in the upcoming Fall "Project on Love."
Many Blessings and Enjoy!
Happy Summer!
