Serenity- on the right track...
Here we are in 2011, a new year and new start...the time many of us make New Year's Resolutions and firmly decide to get on with things we want, but have not accomplished to date. Resolutions, intentions, direction...all good things...as is taking a step back and noticing the amazing things that have happened in our lives, sometimes things that started out 'wrong'...not what we thought we wanted. And in looking deeply (often after the problem is resolved, the break-up is done, the disease is managed or healed) we realize our experiences were events we needed, things that made us grow.
Growth...awareness...consciousness...maybe that's what life is all about... growing, expanding our awareness and consciousness about who we really are and what our relationship to the rest of life is. If we are honest, we know that our selfish dreams, getting more things, never seem to keep us satisfied very long. Countless books, seminars, as well as our own life experiences teach us to look deeper at what might be going on below the surface of life and our experiences. And the more we learn to relax, allow, and go with the flow of life, we start to change our experience of life, to experience peace and serenity. Maybe with a little less pain and efforting we are on the right track.
I'm a firm believer in meditation, quiet time, and making time to sink into the knowing realms of Self. But, meditation and having faith in what life wants to teach us, is not synonymous with doing nothing and "smoking dope on the beach". Dr. Roberto Assagioli (the founder of psychosynthesis) suggested a two-fold approach to what he called "Creative Meditation," a type of dialogue with both the 'reflective' part of mind and the development of a quieter, 'receptive' capability. When I used his suggestions with the concept of "serenity", I became clearer that for me, serenity encompasses peace based on a trust and knowing that all is well, that I am safe, cared for, loved. Serenity has the word "serene" in it, serene... able to wear a gentle smile. And as I explored further, I realized serenity also includes a spaciousness..holding space for what is to come knowing it'll be OK, what I need, and what has "my name on it." No need to be jealous or upset when someone else gets that promotion or great house...mine is coming...give things space...hold the space, and know I am "held," held by a benevolent force/energy that accompanies and guides me, no matter what, no matter the appearance or interpretation.
So, my suggestion for this New Year is to start out with a feeling of serenity, knowing things are OK, we are safe, remembered, cared for, and on the right track (to quote that wonderful song from the musical "Pippin"...."easy baby, you're on the r....ight track..."). And knowing this allows us to make the resolutions and create the vision we want for our lives, remembering we are co-creators, not sole creators, co-creators of life.
Blessings and a VERY HAPPY YEAR
